The author had no knowledge of classical music until he retired and then set out to listen to cassettes (yes, cassettes, this was around 1990 -- at one point he makes a "joke" about George H.W. Bush's 1000 points of light speech; but then again, none of the music has changed so the book doesn't need to be au courant) of classical music and read everything written about the great composers.It was written in a breezy, non-technical style. And it is idiosyncratic, or perhaps reflective . "Very useful guidance" according to Barry Rucker. This book guides the classical music lover to the most worthy compositions of the greatest composers. Occasionally I think some of the compositions are subpar, but in general the guidance is wise, and the mini-biographies of composers are highly interesting.
