DESCRIPTION:

It's not a pleasant story, and Jones himself is amazed that his career has prospered in spite of everything he has done to destroy it. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. Now 65 and recovered from a triple bypass operation, he claims he has conquered his addictions and settled into a happy marriage. There are no insights here about his musical abilities or the reasons for his success, but Jones makes sobering comments on the state of country music today, which he observes is mass-marketed and mass-produced for the young with total disregard for the older performers like himself who started it all. From Publishers Weekly Country music star Jones started performing in rural Texas bars when he was 14 and rose to fame in spite of heavy drinking, drugging, brawling and a penchant for not showing up at his concerts. Writing

Strong and sober, George Jones looks back on his life with searing candor. From his roots in an impoverished East Texas family to his years of womanizing, boozing, brawling, and singing with the voice that made him a star, his story is a nonstop rollercoaster ride of the price of fame. It is also the story of how the love of a good woman, his wife Nancy, helped him clean up his act.

Patty in Fredericksburg, VA said I could NOT put it down.. I seldom read books because few of them hold my attention strongly enough to interrupt my normal schedule. With "I Live To Tell It All" I truly hated to put it down to go to bed - so I went to bed late. I've long been a George Jones fan. I was aware from all the press he got during his career that he had a hard drinking, drug using, tormented personal life so I was anxious to hear about it from him, the man who lived it. Wow, I . An honest man I ordered this book upon hearing of George's death. I've never seen him live and never bought any of his records. Still, I think he had the greatest voice in any genre of music, ever. I agree with George that after the 80's there weren't many noteworthy country artists. If you don't have the look, you'll never make it in the business. Country music isn't country anymore. Miranda Lambert is cute, but she's just a fad that won't b. ,,,And still living it George Jones, the consummate country singer, tells it all, sort of, in this autobiography with Tom Carter, who knows the territory. Unlike Merle, who flaunted the fact that he had no co-writer (or even editor, it seemed), George was smart enough to have Carter help him. The book is an easy read and, while most of it has been "out there" for years in headlines or on the nightly news, it's interesting to read George's perspective.
