Great book, normally I'm an SF/Fantasy kind of guy but even though this was a change from my usual genres I thoroughly enjoyed it. "Excellent book for men or women" according to Cammie Brantley. It helps, but is not necessary, for you to know anything about baseball. The beautiful literate writing, the sense of place, the well drawn relationships, the emotional content and the (mostly) satisfying ending are all you need. I imagine some people may be turned off by the homosexual elements but the writing is clear without being overly graphic. When I started the book it seemed very long but by the end it was all too short. If you like this I would also recommend reading "The Power of One"..
