I read a lot of this period, generally from the Jewish point a view, when Hitler forged the world war ll for world dominance. I rarely have read from the Germans prospective, those who were against Hitler's insane view. The effect the invasion had on these three women and how they dealt with it was pretty amazing. I liked this book and would recommend it.. masterful storytelling and memorable characters great story,where I learned more about German women during and after WWII-particularly women who were married to men who had conspired to kill Hitler. The characters are masterfully drawn and their stories poignant. I don't think I will ever forget this book, or its characters. One of the best books I have read in a long time

Shattuck certainly does. But she is no superhero. The women referred to in the title are widows of three conspirators involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler. Marianne von Lingenfels, whose moneyed pedigree has protected her from the more unsavory punishments of the war, has been tasked with locating the other resistance widows, and ensuring their safety.
