Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. Specifically, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favour of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectival nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual.

a reliable, helpful, well bound edition this latest addition to the stanford nietzsche series offers the two works that are probably the best introduction to nietzsche's thought and style ("Suppose Truth is a woman — what then?"). the translation is excellent and thoroughly reliable, if not quite as insightful as the kaufmann version; the endnotes are helpful, if not quite as trenchant as the kaufmann footnotes; the source text is definitive, ba. "Love the very large pages" according to Tony David. Love the very large pages, even though there is a minute amount of space on the margins the large page size allows for detailed annotation without overcrowding of the page. The covers also have a rich velvet feel, though the design is a bit pixelated. Overall a perfect purchase for the price, especially if you'll be writing all over it and bending the pages around..
