The book I've been waiting for! I'm so happy that Eric Lyon created this book. He recommends, and so do I an additional book The Audio Programming Book which is not very beginner friendly despite the learning C chapters in the beginning, it's still starts off fairly advanced. So, I think for either of these books, you will need a good C intro book if you are new to the C language my personal favorite is C Primer Plus (5th Edition) big tome of a tutorial but very deep and starts off in graceful small pieces. This book is a great resource for those of us who want to build our own externals for Max. Even though the focus is on audio objects, there's lots of great information that applies to building any kind of external as well as making it easy to understand how audio processing is done generally.
