DESCRIPTION:
Cool prints, but. Theresa Lots of really great prints here, but I have several problems with this book.1) the reproductions are not very good. Yes, the prints are just black and white, and how hard should that be to reproduce, but the paper is really cheap, and the black on it is very flat and the black not as black as it should be. (The ones on the shiny cover look fabulous.)2) While I didn't expect any explanatory text, I did want to know the sizes of the prints. Some of them looked like they were very small, and blown up way bigger than the original, based on what the marks look like, and some could have been much larger and vastly reduced, and . great powerful images! David T. this is a very nice anthology.having searched for various compilations on expressionistic woodcuts, this is the only one readily available at a fair price of 7-10 dollars while other anthologies are $30Plus one criticism is that quite a few artists get only 1 or at most 2 woodcuts presented, while a handful get 10-12 woodcuts each, and one artist has more than 20 of his woodcuts presented. thus, a great imbalance that focuses on 4-5 artists while another 20 artists get 1-2 woodcuts apiece depicted. but, overall , this is a great volume if you like this type of artworkit is certainly not light, airy, cheerful or sweet syrup. Four Stars joseph paff Very good---amazing art.

One of the most popular media used by the German Expressionists was the woodcut, important in the history of German art from the time of Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), and especially suited to Expressionism's bold graphics. This superb collection presents over 100 finely reproduced woodcuts from the work of nearly 30 major artists in the movement who worked in the woodcut medium. Most of the woodcuts reproduced here date from the first three decades of the twentieth century. They are power
Among them are Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Käthe Kollwitz, Franz Marc, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, and many others. Individual captions for each selection, notes on each artist, and an informative introduction to the art of the woodcut and the German Expressionist movement add to the book's value as a reference work..
