DESCRIPTION:
Americans across the religious and political spectrum agreed that their country was one nation under God.”Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how an unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.. Church membership soon soared to an all-time high of 69 percent. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. The new president revolutionized the role of religion in American politics. He inaugurated new traditions like the National Prayer Breakfast, as Congress added the phrase under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance and made In God We Trust” the country's first official motto. We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has
it wasn't boring. I really got into it I thought this would be a book slamming the Religious Right. Actually that's what I hoped it would be. It wasn't. It was an educational thesis of religion in America. The story goes back to the turn of the last century, long before I thought this story would begin. It detailed the rise of several leaders over the years. It turned out to be a much more detailed history lesson than just a book ridiculing the right. Even though it was detailed and informative, it wasn't boring. I really got into it.. David G said Challenges many assumptions about religion in the US.. A lot of the book was repetitive and boring. The US was not originally founded as a religious based country, with the founding fathers soundly pushing a strong separation of religion and state. This rejections was based on their horrific experiences in Europe with state sponsored religio. Thoroughly researched background on how we got to the belief that we are a "Christian Nation" One Nation, Under God, by Kevin M. Kruse, is a thoroughly researched and well-cited exposé of how many got to the belief that we are a “Christian nation.” It did not start with the founding of our country, when references to God were generic, even “ceremonially deistic” (as the author states), and used phrases like “Creator,” that could be embraced by multiple faith expressions. This book also helps to explain the rise of the Religious Right, and even the election of Donald Trump, although he is not mentioned because it was published prior to his election.Rather than provid
Kruse's startling One Nation Under God reveals the extraordinary Cold War politics that put 'under God' in America's Pledge of Allegiance, 'In God We Trust' on U.S. A significant contribution to the history of the Christian Right, the Cold war, and the culture wars of the recent past”Religion in American HistoryAn eminently readable book, chock-full of lively and entertaining anecdotes.”PatheosEngagingly traces the rise of the Christian Right as a political force in America. DeMille's The Ten Commandments on Hollywood's biggest movie list. Revisionist in the best sensebold, daring, and intelligentit will change how we think about the American past.”H-Net, H-AmR
