Excellent book This is an excellent book containing seven science fiction novellas. My favorite story was "Troika" by Alastair Reynolds. It was worth the book's purchase price just for this story alone. It tells the story of a Soviet Cosmonaut who was sent into space to explore a mysterious giant machine that suddenly appeared in the solar system. The story keeps switching between the. DickStanley. said A fine collection. What a fine collection of memorable stories with engaging plots and characters. My personal favorites are Stephen Popkes' "Jackie's Boy," Geoffrey A. Landis' "The Sultan of the Clouds," and "Troika" by Alastair Reynolds. The others are more dystopian or cynical, in the unfortunately-bleak modern vein of SF. But all are page-turners that hold the interest and their lengt. "Hits, Misses and Surprises" according to Donald C Roberts. Like most collections some of the stories really grab you and others do not. Overall I enjoyed the book and picked up a couple of new authors to check out. Strangely the one story with some of the most development ended rather abruptly and kind of left me hanging there. Maybe this was/will be fleshed out more in a longer version? Still a good read.
