Axel Heyst, a failed businessman turned mysterious hermit. This is a wonderful book h d kirkland This is my favorite book. I like the isolation of it all on the island and the development of Lena. Her personality changed when she had someone to live for and to love and defend. This goes for Heyst too. Also it interesting how chance misunderstandings and gossip can effect ones life. And there is the jealously of Schombrrg and even Mr. Jones.
