DESCRIPTION:
An old building is not an obstacle but instead a foundation for continued action. Some are well known—Mass MOCA, Market Santa Caterina in Barcelona, Neues Museum in Berlin—and others are almost anonymous. Designing with them is an exhilarating enterprise; adding to them, grafting, inserting, knitting new pieces into the existing built fabric is endlessly stimulating.” —Françoise Astorg Bollack. Françoise Astorg Bollack presents 28 examples gathered in the United States and throughout Europe and the Middle East. This survey of contemporary additions to older buildings is an essential addition to the architectural literature.“I have always loved old buildings. It is clear that working with historic structures is both more environmentally sustainable and cost effective than new architecture and construction—and many believe that the best design occurs at the intersection of old and new. But all demonstrate a unique and appropriate solution to the problem of adapting historic structures to contemporary uses
. Françoise Astorg Bollack is the principal of Françoise Bollack Architects, a firm that specializes in preservation and reinvention of historic structures, and a faculty member at the Columbia University School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation
Copious text and floor plans accompany beautiful photography.” —Interior Design “How can one reconcile a love of old buildings with a modern architectural practice? Bollack, who runs a thriving New York firm and teaches in the Historic Preservation Program at Columbia University, finds that many peers have made successful ‘interventions’ with older buildings which she categorises into five types: insertions, parasites, wraps, juxtapositions and weavings. One of the most convincing aspects of the book can be found in the int

I am reviewing more what I think of the architecture contained here than the quality of the writing, which I have no opinion on.It really drove home the point that everything in these buildings that has been done to them in the name of renovation, has been ugly and at times, grotesque. Every example shown in this book highlights how much more beautiful the original building was than what bland, ill-conceived, inharmonious, additions were grafted upon these noble places. It's really a testament to the loss of aesthetic judgement in our time. I can't believe the authors didn't notice this pattern.
