So many "how to" books seems to have hundreds of pages when they only needed 100, but I learned something from almost every single page. The first chapter is Nuts and Bolts, and covers everything from "beginning sentences with subjects and verbs" to "letting punctuation control page and space". The writer gives a "quick list" of writing tools from "Break long projects into parts" to "Limit self-criticism in early drafts" (my personal favorite). All-in-all a really helpful book that is well worth the price.. "What a delightful surprise this book is!" according to Jeffery Cotton. Some of the reviewers on Amazon claim they feel "talked down to" by Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer. But I sure don't. In fact, the author uses examples from his own earlier writing to show how it could be improved by using the steps outlined in this book. That was a very refreshing approach, where how-to books are concerned.I have an Ivy League Ph.D. and so often suffer under the delusion that I don't need anyone to tell me how to write effectively, thank you.
